GIUDECCA

La Giudecca è la zona di Venezia che ho frequentato meno, e sarà meta delle mie esplorazioni future. La trovo affascinante per la sua doppia faccia: più edificata verso la città e più verde verso la laguna, per le differenze architettoniche di stile con il resto della città e per quell’atmosfera che si trova solo nelle zone meno affollate dai turisti. Nei sestieri centrali, dove gli abitanti originari sono sempre meno, certe cose non si vedono più…le donne sedute fuori dalle porte di casa, lasciata aperta sulla calle o campiello, a chiacchierare con le vicine (una volta ricamare o lavorare con le perle) mi è capitato di rivederle ultimamente solo qui, nel sestier Castello e in alcune isole come Pellestrina…Così come vedere dei “campi” dove c’è ancora l’erba al centro…

Giudecca Island will be the destination of my next trips to Venice, because I don’t know it well. I find it fascinating for its double face: more buildings looking to Venice and more green areas looking to the lagoon, for the architectural differences from Venice and for that special vibe typical of the zones not so full of tourists. In central “sestieri”, where original citizens are always less, you don’t see certain scenes anymore…women sit out of the front door, left open on the “calle” or “campiello”, while chatting with neighbours (in the past also embroidering or working with glass beads).

I’ve seen those scenes, in my near past, only here , in sestier Castello or on the islands as Pellestrina… as well as “campi” that still keep grass in the centre….

Da bambina se passavo per il canale della Giudecca in barca mi chiedevo cosa fosse quello strano castello di mattoni simile a quelli delle fiabe, ma abbandonato, era così diverso dai palazzi veneziani … con il tempo poi ho scoperto che era il molino Stucky ora Hilton Hotel e che qualche mio antenato ci ha anche lavorato…

When I was a child going through Giudecca channel on a boat, I asked myself “what’s that strange red-bricks castle?” so similar to the ones of fairy tales, but abandoned, it was so different from other Venetian palaces … after few years I’ve discovered that it was the Molino Stucky ,now Hilton Hotel, and even that some forfather has worked there...

Come sapete amo il recupero di edifici del passato, il molino Stucky è uno di questi casi, ma non è l’unico alla Giudecca: ci sono diverse costruzioni dell’800 nate come industrie che per fortuna sono state riconvertite dopo aver esaurito la loro funzione originale. Molto vicino al Molino Stucky ad esempio, dove un tempo c’era il birrificio San Marco, ci sono adesso spazi espositivi, studi e unità abitative. In questo periodo c’è un padiglione della Biennale d’arte.

You know I love old buildings repurpose, the Molino Stucky is an example, but not the only one in Giudecca: there other buildings, built in the ’800s, which were born as factory , later they have stopped their first function and have been fortunately repurposed into something different. Near to Molino Stucky for example, at the former San Marco brewery, there are now an art village, studios and private houses. Now you can find one Biennale pavilion.

E proprio fra il Molino Stucky e l’ex-birrificio San Marco c’è un luogo magico e affascinante, dove storia e tradizione continuano dal 1919 con la stessa finalità: la creazione dei bellissimi tessuti Fortuny, conosciuti in tutto il mondo.

Ho scoperto leggendo altri blog che è possibile visitare lo showroom e il giardino su appuntamento, (non la fabbrica, per preservare il segreto della tecnica originale).

Between Molino Stucky and former San Marco brewery, there is a magic and fascinating place, where history and tradition continue from 1919 to create the wonderful and worldwide renowned Fortuny fabrics.

Reading other blogs, I’ve found that it is possible to visit Fortuny showroom and factory gardens on request, (not the factory, of course, to protect their original technique secret).
