IKEAHACKERS and EKET

Una delle cose che mi piacciono di Ikea è la capacità di evolversi. Non solo creando nuovi prodotti, lanciando nuovi trend, ma rinnovando anche quegli articoli che non escono mai dal catalogo….

Non è che altri brand non lo facciano, ma Ikea ha un dialogo con i suoi clienti: trae spunti dalle loro esigenze ma anche dalle loro idee. Avete visto che adesso sul sito ikea si possono fare le recensioni dei prodotti?

Il fatto che i suoi mobili abbiamo prezzi accessibili e che a montarli siano i clienti stessi ha stimolato in tante persone la voglia di personalizzarli o di inventarsi soluzioni nuove modificandoli. Mentre con un mobile di più alta qualità , artigianale o pre-assemblato che sia, riesce più difficile (anche se non impossibile!! Di questo ne riparleremo…).

One of the things I like about Ikea is the ability to evolve. Not only creating new products, launching new trends, but also renewing those articles that never leave from the catalog…

I know other brands do this, but Ikea has a dialogue with its customers: get inspiration from their needs and ideas. Have see that on its website it is now possible to make product reviews?

The fact that ikea furniture has affordable prices and that assembly is made by the customers themselves, stimulated in many people the desire to customize or to invent new solutions. Instead with higher quality finished furniture, it seems more difficult (but not impossible!! We will discuss this in the future…).

Sto pensando agli ikeahackers!!  Sono moltissimi, e tanti sono confluiti in una community nata dal sito ikeahackers.net di Jules Yap. Per chi non lo sapesse, era una semplice appassionata che ha pensato di raccogliere in un sito tutte le idee di utilizzo dei prodotti ikea rielaborati della gente, ad un certo punto però per questioni legali sul marchio e sulla sicurezza sembrava che Ikea volesse far chiudere il sito. Invece visto che la rete l’ha supportata hanno invitato Jules nella loro sede in Svezia (e lei vive in Malesia) per chiarire le sue reali intenzioni e capire se era possibile lasciarla continuare con il suo sito: e così è stato, Ikeahackers continua a essere una cosa indipendente ma parallela a Ikea Group.

I'm thinking to Ikeahackers!! There are many, and many have converged into a community born from ikeahackers.net site of Jules Yap. For those who don't know, she was a simple ikea fan, who thought to collect on a site any people’s idea of hacked ikea products; at a certain point, for legal and safety reasons, seemed that Ikea wanted to shut down the site. Instead thanks to web people support, they invited Jules in Sweden (she’s from Malaysia) to clarify her intentions and figure out if they can let her continue with her site: so  Ikeahackers continues to be independent but parallel to Ikea Group.

Anche altri l’hanno sicuramente notato, nelle ultime collezioni ci sono diversi prodotti che sono stati revisionati e implementati, se non addirittura disegnati, partendo dalle idee degli ikeahackers.

I don’t think to be the only one to have noticed that in latest collections there are several products that were updated and implemented, or actually drawn, starting from the ideas of ikeahackers.

Ad esempio questa interpretazione dei vasi Skurar usati come lampade: ha ispirato la lampada Mölndall.

Oppure questa rielaborazione di Expedit, ha ispirato i nuovi accessori per Kallax (ex-expedit).

A proposito di Kallax (ex-expedit), quando hanno rinnovato questa libreria modificandone le misure, hanno aggiunto accessori, finiture, colori ma hanno anche tolto alcuni modelli…. Ad esempio quello con una sola casella, il pezzo più piccolo… e lì mi son detta: ma perché?  Era usatissimo così com’era ma anche in mille varianti di fantasia…..Ora è tornato nell’assortimento, ed è nato anche il modello con due caselle che prima non c’era.

Credo che gli hackers abbiano indirettamente contribuito anche a queste scelte.

About Kallax (ex-expedit), when they updated this bookshelf, changing its measures, they added accessories, finishes, colours but have also removed some models ... For example the single cubic one, the smaller piece ... and I thought:  why? It was very used as it was, but also in many other ways...Now it's back,  and it is born the model 1X2 too!

I believe that hackers have indirectly contributed to these choices.

Mi piace la libreria KALLAX/EXPEDIT, la trovo solida e funzionale infatti a casa mia ne ho due.

Una marrone 2X4 caselle in camera di mio figlio,  perfetta per i libri i giochi e anche per fungere da comodino.

E una bianca (composta da due moduli sovrapposti da 2X2 caselle) nell’angolo vicino all’ingresso, proprio a fianco dell’appendiabiti: utile per avere a portata di mano ma in ordine le cose che usiamo tutti i giorni come borse, zaini, occhiali, sciarpe/cappelli, ma anche documenti ,laptop, netbook, cavi e macchina fotografica..

I like the bookshelf KALLAX/EXPEDIT, I find it solid and functional: I have two in my home.

One brown Expedit 2x4 is in my son's room, perfect for books games and also to serve as nightstand.

Another white one (composed by two 2x2 overlapped units) is in the corner near my entry way, positioned right next to clotheshanger: it is useful to keep everyday stuff: such as bags, backpacks, sunglasses, scarves/hats, but also documents, laptops, netbooks, cables and camera…

Però esteticamente ci sono delle caratteristiche migliorabili, che non la rendono adatta a tutti gli ambienti, almeno secondo il mio gusto. E’ piuttosto spigolosa (anche se in kallax hanno un po’ arrotondato i bordi) e la struttura ha uno spessore importante, appesa al muro può risultare visivamente ingombrante, per alcuni usi potrebbe essere anche meno profonda. Inoltre gli accessori come cassetti e ante hanno una struttura aggiuntiva a cubo che va infilato nella casella esistente,  restringendo abbastanza lo spazio interno.

Molte volte guardando un angolo di casa da sfruttare, ho pensato: se potessi scomporre in moduli l’EXPEDIT/KALLAX e “snellirlo” un po’ lo metterei qui….farei questo….

Lo so: non esiste solo Ikea, mobili simili si trovano anche altrove ma per le ragione che ho elencato prima (prezzo e assemblaggio) mi riesce sempre più facile, per un fai da te, partire da un prodotto Ikea!

BUT kallax/expedit look can be improved, according to my taste it does not suits well in all rooms/uses. It has too sharp edges (though in Kallax version edges have been a bit rounded), the structure thickness is big, in case you hang it on a wall, it can give heavy and clutter impact and for some uses it could be too large in-depth. Moreover accessories such as drawers and doors must be added with an additional structure that fits inside each cubic space, so it means lost of inner space.

Many times looking at one empty corner in my house, I thought: If I could break down into modules the EXPEDIT/KALLAX and make it thinner, I'd put it here ... I would do this ....

I know: there is not only Ikea, similar pieces of furniture are available elsewhere, but for the reasons that I listed before (price and assembly), I find it easier, for DIY projects, start from Ikea products!

Credo di non essere stata l’unica a desiderare che qualcosa di simile fosse aggiunto al loro catalogo perché l’anno scorso ho notato la serie Valje, adesso evoluta in EKET.   Dove la struttura è più sottile, la sezione di incastro è tagliata a 45° gradi, quindi risulta più elegante; è disponibile in profondità diverse, con ante e cassetti integrati, con base, piedini o binari per la sospensione. Versatile e componibile! Mi piace.

I guess someone else have wished that something similar was added to their catalog, because last year I noticed the Valje serie, now evolved into EKET. Where the structure is thinner, the interlocking section is cut at 45 degrees, so it seems more elegant; it is available in different depths, with integrated doors and drawers, with base, legs or suspension rails. Versatile and modular!  I like it.

Credo che la userò per l’ennesimo progetto di rinnovamento del mio salotto! Che si trascina in mille versioni da un sacco di tempo! Prima o poi lo farò e vi mostrerò come!

I think I will use it for another renovation project of my living room! Another after thousands versions!   Sooner or later I will realize it and I will show you!
